If your Google Business Profile is not showing up, there are usually two possible reasons. The first is that Google is not showing the profile at all, because it is unverified, suspended, a duplicate or marked closed. The second is that it does show, but it ranks too low for anyone to find it. Each problem has its own fixes, so take two minutes to find out which one you have before you change anything.

This guide walks you through that test, then 9 fixes in the order we would try them. Each fix covers what to check, what to do and what to avoid. If you want a second opinion on your website while you work, our free Claude connector runs a full page audit. It checks your pages against the searches you want to show up for. Once the profile is back, our Google Business Profile checklist helps you fill in every field properly.

First, the 2-minute test: missing or ranking low?

Run this test logged out of your Google account, or in a private browser window. That way Google does not show you a personalised view.

  1. Search your exact business name plus your town. For example, "Harbour Plumbing Brighton". If your profile shows on the right (desktop) or at the top (mobile), Google can show it. That means you have a ranking problem, not a visibility problem. Go to fixes 7 to 9.
  2. Search the same thing in Google Maps. If it shows here too, the same applies: it is a ranking problem.
  3. If it shows in neither place, open your profile while logged in. Search your business name on Google while signed in to the account that manages it. Your profile tools appear above the profile. Look for any message about verification, a suspension or a review in progress.
  4. Write down what you see. Is there a "Get verified" button? A notice that the profile is suspended or disabled? Nothing at all? This tells you which fix to start with.

Here is the short version as a decision tree. Start at the top row and stop at the first "yes".

Question If yes If no
Does it show when you search your exact name plus town? Ranking problem: fixes 7 to 9 Next question
Does your profile say "Get verified"? Fix 1 Next question
Does it say suspended, disabled or restricted? Fix 2 Next question
Is your address a virtual office, PO box or your home? Fix 3 Next question
Did you change the name, address or category in the last few days? Fix 4 Next question
Does it show as "Permanently closed" or "Temporarily closed"? Fix 5 Next question
Can you find a second listing for your business? Fix 6 Contact Google support (see the last section)

Most guides list 15 or 20 causes in no particular order. The order matters. You cannot fix your ranking while the profile is suspended, and changing your categories does nothing if the profile was never verified.

Why is my Google Business listing not showing? 9 fixes in order

1. Finish verification

Verification tells Google you are allowed to represent the business. A new listing that was never verified is the first thing to check when it seems invisible to customers.

Google's verification help page lists four methods: phone or text, email, live video call and mail (a postcard). Google says "verification methods are automatically determined by Google and can't be changed". The options you get depend on your business, so you may not see all four.

What the same Google page says about timing:

  • "Verification reviews take up to 5 business days."
  • Postcard codes: "Most codes arrive within 14 days", and "Verification codes expire after 30 days."
  • While you wait, do not edit your business name, address or category. Google warns: "If you do, the code we sent you won't work." Do not request a new code either. Google says a new request makes the earlier code invalid and makes the process longer.

If verification fails, the "Get verified" button comes back. Try another method if Google offers one. For a live video call, Google asks you to be at your business during its opening hours. On camera, you show three things: where you are (outside signs or the street), that the business is yours (products or branded equipment), and that you manage it (an area only staff can enter, a cash register or keys).

2. Check for a suspension

Google's page on suspended or disabled profiles puts it plainly: "The public can't go to the profile." That fully explains a listing that has disappeared.

What to do, following that page:

  1. Read the Business Profile guidelines again, especially the address rules in fix 3. Fix anything that breaks them first.
  2. Open Google's appeals tool, then choose the profile and the decision you want to appeal.
  3. Add evidence: a business registration, a business licence, a tax certificate or a utility bill for the business. Google asks you to check that the business name and address on these documents match the profile.
  4. Submit it once. Google says "Appeals can only be submitted once."

The help page gives no timeline for appeals. If yours is denied, Google lets you ask for another review with evidence you did not send the first time.

Do not create a new profile. The same Google page says: "Do not create a new Business Profile for the same business." A second profile is a duplicate, and duplicates are a problem of their own (fix 6).

3. Make sure your address follows Google's rules

Here is what the Google Business Profile guidelines say:

Your situation What Google allows
You have a shop or office that customers visit Show the address
You go to customers (plumber, cleaner, mobile hairdresser) and work from home Hide the address and set a service area instead
Virtual office (a rented mailing address where you don't work) Not eligible
PO box, or a mailbox at a remote location Not acceptable
Coworking space Only with clear signage, customers received there during business hours, and your own staff present during those hours

A business that goes to its customers and hides its address is called a service-area business. The guidelines say that "if you're a service-area business, you should hide your business address from customers." Their own example is a plumber who runs the business from a home address: Google tells that plumber to clear the address from the profile. Hiding your home address is what Google asks you to do.

4. Wait out recent edits, and stop editing

If you changed your name, address, hours or category in the last few days, give Google time. Local Falcon, a local SEO tool, says edits can take up to three days to appear. That estimate comes from Local Falcon, not from Google.

A big change, like a new address or a new business name, can send the profile back for verification. If that happens, go back to fix 1.

The mistake to avoid is editing the same field again and again because nothing has changed yet. Make one change, then leave it alone.

5. Check you are not marked closed

Search your business name and look under it. A listing marked "Permanently closed" or "Temporarily closed" is easy to miss in search. This can happen after you set temporary hours, after a move, or when someone suggests an edit to your profile.

Fix it in your profile: mark the business as open again and check your regular hours. If your profile tools show edits suggested by the public, review them. Do not just ignore them.

6. Find and deal with duplicates

Search Google Maps for your business name, your phone number and any old addresses. Two listings for one business split your reviews and make it harder for customers to find the right one.

  • If you manage both, keep the one with the most reviews and the correct details.
  • If you don't manage the second one, request ownership of it, or ask Google Business Profile support to deal with it.
  • Never try to "fix" a suspension by making a new listing (see fix 2).

7. Fix name, address and phone mismatches

Google's page on local ranking says: "If your business info isn't accurate, your Business Profile might not show up for relevant searches in your area." Check that your name, address and phone number are the same in three places:

  1. Your Business Profile
  2. Your website (footer and contact page)
  3. The main directories that list you (Yelp, Facebook, Apple Maps, Bing Places and the directories for your trade)

One old phone number on one directory is not a disaster. The same business listed at two addresses in several places is worth cleaning up.

8. Choose the right primary category, then fill in hours and services

Your primary category tells Google what you mainly do. "Plumber" and "Plumbing supply store" match very different searches. Pick the category for your main service, the one that brings in most of your income. Then add your services, your real opening hours and a description that uses the same words your customers use.

Our Google Business Profile checklist takes you through each field one by one.

9. Treat "near me" as a ranking problem

If your profile shows for your name but not for "electrician near me", it is not hidden. It is ranking low. Google's local ranking page says local results are mainly based on three things:

  • Relevance: how well your profile matches what someone is searching for.
  • Distance: how far your business is from the person searching.
  • Prominence: how well known your business is. Google names "how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have" among the signals.

You can't change distance. You can improve relevance (your category, your services, a website page for each service) and prominence (a steady flow of reviews, and other sites mentioning and linking to you). Ranking changes are not instant, and nothing is guaranteed. If your website is part of the problem, start with our Fundamentals guides.

Showing in search but not on Maps, or the other way round?

Google Search and Google Maps use the same profile. If your business shows for its name in one but not the other, the profile exists. The cause is usually a ranking difference, a recent edit that has not reached both yet, or a personalised result.

Check three things:

  1. Repeat the test in a private window. Your location and search history change what you see.
  2. If you are a service-area business, your street address is hidden, so there is no pin at your home. Your listing can still appear for searches in your service area.
  3. If you edited the profile in the last few days, wait (fix 4) before you change anything else.

If it is still missing from both after all that, go back to the decision tree.

"Your business is not visible to customers": real or false alarm?

Google sometimes shows this message in the profile tools. It can be real: an unverified or suspended profile can be hidden from the public.

It can also be wrong. On 16 March 2023, Search Engine Roundtable reported that Google showed "not visible to customers" to many owners by mistake. Their profiles stayed visible, and the bug was fixed the same day.

Don't go by the message alone. Run the 2-minute test. If customers can find you by name in a private window, the profile is visible and the message is a bug or a delay. If they can't, follow the fixes in order.

When to contact Google support, and when to pay someone

Contact Google Business Profile support when:

  • verification keeps failing with every method offered;
  • you can't get ownership of a duplicate listing;
  • your appeal was denied and you have new evidence;
  • you went through the whole decision tree and still can't find the cause.

Have your documents ready, and make sure the name and address on them match the profile.

Pay a local SEO professional when the profile is visible but you can't climb for the searches that bring work, and you have already done fixes 7 and 8. That is a ranking job, and it usually involves your website as much as your profile.

Don't pay anyone who promises to "unsuspend" a profile quickly. Only Google reviews appeals, and nobody outside Google can guarantee the result.

FAQ

Why is my business not showing up on Google when I search the name?

The most likely causes are an unverified profile, a suspension, a listing marked closed or an address Google does not accept. Sign in, open your profile tools and look for "Get verified" or a suspension notice.

How long does it take for a new Google Business Profile to show up?

Google's verification help page says verification reviews take up to 5 business days. Most postcard codes arrive within 14 days and expire after 30 days. Don't edit your name, address or category while you wait.

Can I have a Google Business Profile if I work from home?

Yes. If you go to your customers, the Business Profile guidelines say you should hide your business address and set a service area. A virtual office or a PO box is not eligible.

Why is my Google Business Profile not showing up in "near me" searches?

If you can find it by name, it is visible but ranking low. Google ranks local results mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Work on your category, your services, your reviews and your website.

What to do today

  1. Run the 2-minute test in a private window: your exact name plus town, in Google and in Maps.
  2. Sign in, open your profile tools, and note any "Get verified" button or suspension notice.
  3. Check your address against the table in fix 3, and hide it if you work from home.
  4. Search Maps for your phone number to find any duplicate listing.
  5. If the profile shows but ranks low, check your primary category and run the free page audit on the website page your profile links to.
